Screens as Stained Glass:
Toward an Ambient and Architectural use of Screens in Worship

Deacon Sherry Coman

How can we more widely engage the screens in our church spaces to theologically enliven and deepen our experience of worship? Using the historical model of the introduction of stained glass into the churches of the early middle ages, we will explore the ways in which screens can be considered as architectural aspects of our gathering place, offering ambience, mood and vitally underscoring worship themes.

Reconsidering the use of screens for mostly projected text, we will explore instead how screens can offer meditative resting places with rich visual imagery.

Some good open source resources will be reviewed as a way of preparing folks to practice this screen work in their settings.
